In December, Troop 594 did their yearly tradition; going to Yule Log at Scoutland. Yule Log is a huge competition for troops in the Northeast Georgia Council. The competitions included a memory game and finding out who could lash three poles together with a flag tied to it. Then they would see who could raise the flag the fastest. They also tied knots and many other activities. At night each troop got a set of compass bearings and they would all begin at a different place. At the end of the evening they had the Yule Log, and the first troop to reach it got to keep it and burn it. Whoever thought of this scouting event must have been really brilliant. It is too bad we did not even try to find it.
Although I did not go on this year’s Yule Log, I interviewed many boys in our troop. They all pretty much said the exact same thing – our troop was a failure at this scouting event. The campout, being December, had cold winter weather. In addition to the chilliness, it was also raining. In one way, I wish I had come to Yule Log to work harder at the activities. In another way, I am glad I avoided the cold, rainy weather. I hope it goes better in 2010. Matthew Carpenter
